This version of the Question is the rebooted one, the one in New 52. Almost nothing is known about his origin. His sin? Probably in the distant past, this person of unclear origin committed some unknown crime/s, apparently the worst of any crimes any being has ever committed, he was sentenced to wander the Earth for eternity with neither face nor memory to provide any indication of his transgressions. He travels, lost and tormented by the ultimate question: who am I? Ouch. That sucks you know, knowing nothing about yourself. Ahaha!
